Prof. Dr. Mir Mohammad Maqbool, President and Founder of Voluntary Medicare Society (VMS), was honoured at SKICC, Srinagar, on August 25, 2025, for his exemplary contribution to disability advocacy and inclusive empowerment. The award was presented by Chief Minister Mr. Omar Abdullah in the presence of Ms. Sakina Itoo, Minister for Education and Health, as well as other dignitaries and officials.
Prof. Dr. Maqbool established the Voluntary Medicare Society in 1970 as a pioneering initiative to provide comprehensive rehabilitation, education, skill development, and other essential services to persons with disabilities.Under his leadership, VMS has evolved into one of the foremost organizations in Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, offering specialized medical care, education, physiotherapy, and support for both children and adults with diverse disabilities. Thousands have benefitted from its services, reflecting Dr. Maqbool’s mission to facilitate independency and dignity for persons with disabilities.
The ceremony’s recognition highlights Dr. Maqbool’s decades-long dedication, emphasizing his impact in bringing disability issues to the forefront of public policy and social welfare. Dignitaries at the event lauded his visionary leadership and cited the critical role of organizations like VMS in improving accessibility, inclusion, and quality of life for people with disabilities. Notably, VMS has produced many international & national sports players and offers a range of rehabilitation services that transform lives
The event was jointly organized by the Department of Social Welfare and the Rehabilitation Council of India. Prof. Dr. Maqbool’s award stands as a testament to his selfless service and the vital societal change led by VMS in the region.
