Celebrating Abilities: VMS celebrates International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2024
Srinagar, Dec 3: The Voluntary Medicare Society (VMS) commemorated International Day of Persons with disabilities on December 3, 2024, in partnership with the Office of the Commissioner of Disabilities with a dynamic program designed to promote inclusivity, raise awareness, and strengthen understanding within the community.
The secretary VMS Er. Mushtaq Ahmad Malik in his inaugural speech welcomed all the dignitaries and highlighted this year’s theme "Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future.
The day unfolded with engaging interactive sessions that brought together individuals with disabilities and members of the wider society. These sessions served as a platform for open dialogue, fostering empathy and mutual respect while highlighting the importance of creating an inclusive environment.
The celebration was far more than a conventional commemoration. Through an engaging array of performances including dynamic skits, success stories, and captivating artistic expressions participants demonstrated that disability is not a limitation, but a different pathway to excellence.
A poignant moment arrived with the special tribute through a video presentation to the late Mr. Khurshid Ahmad Malik, former Vice-President of VMS, who was a beacon of strength, courage, and inspiration for all. Despite being wheelchair-bound for 38years after a life-changing road accident, his determination never wavered, and he went on to serve as a dedicated IAS officer, making significant contributions to society and the public service. His legacy of dedication continues to inspire the vision & mission of VMS.
Prof. Dr. Mir Mohammad Maqbool, Founder/President of Voluntary Medicare Society, delivered a keynote address emphasizing the organization's steadfast commitment to empowering persons with disabilities. He highlighted the critical need for collective efforts in building a society that celebrates diversity and ensures equal opportunities for all.

Health services Kashmir Dr. Arjumand Bashir, Secretary District Legal Services (Sgr & Budgam District) Mrs. Nusrat Ali Hakak, Principal GDC Bemina Dr. Yasmeen Farooq, Mr. Javid Anim CEO Arco Cements Pvt. Ltd, Dr. Faiz orthopedician, Dr. sana, Mr. Farooq Ahmad and Mr. Mohd Ali lone from HPVT, Mr. Hashim from Al imdaad trust, Mr. Asrar Durrani from Durrein Tea LLP, Chartered Accountant Mr Upendar Bhat, Dr. Fareeda Ashai, Executive and General Members of VMS. Their presence and insights enriched the event, reinforcing the significance of the day.
Mr. Iqbal Lone, Commissioner for Disabilities, spoke passionately about the importance of empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring their active participation in societal development. He emphasized the role of policy reforms and collaborative efforts in breaking barriers
Dr. Arjumand Bashir, Deputy Director of Health Services Kashmir, underscored the health and wellness challenges faced by persons with disabilities. She highlighted the need for accessible healthcare and holistic support systems
Mrs. Nusrat Ali Hakak, Secretary, District Legal Services (Srinagar & Budgam), spoke about the legal framework supporting the rights of persons with disabilities. She stressed the importance of awareness and advocacy.
Mr. Asrar Durrani, Founder/director Durrein Tea LLP, shared inspiring insights on corporate responsibility towards inclusivity. He reiterated the importance of creating employment opportunities for persons with disabilities
Dr. Faiz Ahmad in his impressive speech laid emphasis on wearing of safety gears to avoid accidents and untoward incidents and stressed to have wide publicity among the common masses for wearing of safety gears.
To honour the efforts of individuals and organizations championing disability rights, certificates of appreciation and awards were presented at the end of the event. These accolades celebrated those who have made meaningful strides in promoting empowerment and inclusion. Special recognition was extended to members of national wheelchair basketball teams, symbolizing the remarkable athletic prowess and competitive spirit of individuals with disabilities.
In the concluding remarks, Er. Mushtaq Ahmad Malik, Secretary of VMS, expressed heartfelt appreciation to the Guests, Management of VMS, participants, volunteers, and staff. He acknowledged their valuable contributions,
which made the observance a resounding success and underscored the collaborative spirit that drives the VMS mission.
The Voluntary Medicare Society remains at the forefront of advocating for the health, well-being, and rights of persons with disabilities. Its annual observance of World Disability Day stands as a testament to its ongoing dedication to creating an equitable and inclusive society for all.
